Module 5:

Supporting physical development in the early years

This module explores how your planning, curriculum and environment can help children learn, develop and refine their physical skills.

Physical development is central to children’s all-round development. This is why it is one of the three prime areas of learning in the early years foundation stage (EYFS). Physical activity helps children to master control of their body and build healthy habits. As an early years practitioner, you will help children develop the physical, fine and gross motor skills they need to thrive.

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  • follow the typical stages of physical development in early years
  • highlight potential factors that can affect physical development
  • examine the impact of physical skills on learning, development and behaviour
  • understand the importance of the curriculum, environment and relationships for promoting physical development
