Mathematics
This module explores how children develop mathematical understanding and how you can help them with this. It provides support for the teaching of number, pattern, shape, space and measures.
Mathematics is key for children’s future life chances. Learning mathematics begins from the earliest stages of life and helps them to make sense of the world around them. It is essential that children enjoy and develop positive attitudes to mathematics. As an early years practitioner, you have an important role in this, providing an engaging curriculum and culture where children regularly experience, explore and solve mathematical problems.
On completion of this module you will be able to:
- nurture positive attitudes and interests in mathematics
- provide developmentally appropriate early number experiences
- support children to spot patterns and relationships in mathematics
- explain the importance of early spatial experiences
What you’ll learn
This module covers:
- nurturing mathematical development from birth
- number including verbal counting, object counting, numerals and subitising
- patterns and relationships
- spatial reasoning, including shape, space and measures
