Identifying children’s developmental differences and specific needs is crucial to ensuring all children are able to learn and develop and have the best start in life. As an early years practitioner, you play a significant role in creating and supporting inclusive environments where children can thrive and be happy and healthy. Adapting your practice to meet the needs of all children is essential. This module will strengthen your understanding of how to identify developmental differences and needs, and help you consider different factors affecting children’s development when they access the learning and curriculum on offer in the setting.

On completion of this module you will be able to:

  • understand the key special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) legislation and guidance, the importance of early identification of children’s developmental differences and needs and what the distinction is between them
  • understand the impact of knowledge and learning gaps on children’s development, be able to identify developmental differences and needs and know when to make a referral to an appropriate specialist
  • understand the importance of your role in supporting children’s individual differences and needs, creating an inclusive environment and building effective partnerships
